Design and Duties
This Fortnite map game mode was made in collaboration with the Triangle Interactive Arts Collective for their UEFN Game Jam (a Game Jam where we exclusively used Unreal Engine for Fortnite). It was a fun time, met a lot of people and learned the wonders of UEFN. Although the group size was small, we did work together really well. The main gimmick of our map is that you can swim underwater, which is something you can't do in normal Fortnite we did this by combining a skydive box and a water box together, giving the effect of swimming under water. At first, we had issues with scope creep and choosing the theme, but we did a compromise and had the theme be Vikings vs Dolphins. We had a lot of people from many different disciplines work on this project, so seeing everyone work together and make a cool map that will sometimes be playable in Fortnite is really cool.
What I learned
This was my first time learning and trying out UEFN, although many of my skills from Unreal Engine 5 transferred over, and it was very fun learning the differences between UEFN and UE 5. My favorite part of UEFN is using Prefabs to help enhance the level in a variety of ways by scaling the different actors in orientations that they aren't usually put in.
